Meanwhile, The Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Mr. Godwin Emefiele, has declared that the January 31, 2023 deadline fixed by the apex bank for the return of old N200, N500 and N1,000 banknotes would not be extended.

The CBN Governor further, urged those who might still be holding on to the old banknotes to turn them in, assuring them they would not be harassed by the anti-graft agencies.

The CBN Governor’s comment came just as the Senate and House of Representatives members urged the banking sector regulator to extend the deadline.

Senate on Deadline for old Naira Note in Nigeria

The Senate Federal Republic of Nigeria, yesterday plead the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN to extend the deadline for the exchange of old naira notes from the January 31 deadline to May 31, 2023.

Moving the motion, Umar who recalled that the Senate in its resolution on Dec. 28, 2022, urged the CBN to extend the use of the old notes from Jan. 31 to June 30, said that however, the apex bank had insisted on terminating the use of the old naira notes by end of Jan.

The Senator who lamented that there were no enough new naira notes in circulation and as such, moved that the date should be extended to July 31, said: “Experiences around the world have shown that such abrupt decisions if not controlled usually created chaos.

New Deadline for old Currency in Nigeria

As of the date of this publication, no new date has been announced by The Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Mr. Godwin Emefiele. We are expecting more announcement by CBN Governor.
