In a just concluded meeting, the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Honorable Isa Pantami, has spoken about the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) and the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) to cancel the N20 fee imposed on network users for National Identification Number retrieval requests.

This statement was backed up and signed by his spokesperson, Uwa Suleiman, on Friday 18th 2020 in Abuja. The minister, Honorable Isa Pantami directive’s, which the spokesperson said took immediate effect, was an intervention directed at making the process of National Identification Number retrieving easy and affordable for all network users and subscribers all around the country.

He said that the Executive Vice-Chairman of Nigerian Communications Commissions NCC and the Director-General of National Identification Management Commissions, NIMC informed him in a letter conveying the implementation of the directive, that the relevant authorities which included all the telecommunication companies in the country had met and negotiated an easy way with the Mobile Network Operators in that regard of cancelling the fee imposed for retrieving the National Identification Number.

“By this waiver, all Nigerians, network users, subscribers and applicants can access the service using the *346# code for their National Identification Number retrieval at no charge for the duration of the NIN/SIM Card integration exercise,” he added.

You may be finding this news strange, but the Federal Government had earlier directed Nigerians this week that National Identification Numbers (NIN) be integrated with SIMs for security purposes and basic identification reasons.

Ending the meeting, the minister further appreciated the zealous and unending efforts of all stakeholders and encouraged them to continue sacrificing more for national interest and future purposes. (NAN)
